- "Archibald Moncrieff, of Balgony (primus), born about 1562, fifth son of William, eldest son of William M. of that Ilk, and Jean, daugh. of Laurence, third Lord Oliphant; educated in England and Univ. of St Andrews; M.A. (21st March 1580); adm. in 1586, with Arngask also in charge; pres. to vicarage by James Vi. before 1st Sept. 1595; app. Prior and Commendator of Elcho 28th Jan. 1601, and conjointly with his second son a yearly pension from the Abbey of Scone of L466, 13s. 4d. on 1st and 17th May 1606. He was appointed by the Privy Council, 6th March 1589, one of the commissioners for the Preservation of True Religion in Perth, Stormont, and Dunkeld; was a member of Assembly in 1590, 1597, 1602, 1610, and 1618. He purchased the estate of Balgony in 1611; was recommended for a bishopric, and was a member of the Court of High Commission 15th June 1619; dem. before 26th Nov. 1630; died between 29th Aug. and 23rd Nov. 1634. He marr. Margaret, daugh. of Sir William Auchenleck of Balmanno, and had issue - Archibald, his successor in the parish; George, min. of Arngask; Andrew, advocate, 1637; John, served under Gustavus Adolphus in Germany; Mary (marr. John Arnott of Pitmedden); Sarah (marr. John Lockhart, son of Lee); Ann (marr. John Wood, min. of Tulliallan); Elizabeth (marr., cont. 10th Sept. and 5th Oct. 1635, Robert, son to David Dempstertoun, portioner of Auchtermuchty)."
